23 Outdoor Hobbies To Try:
1. Snorkeling
Maybe you’ve snorkeled before or maybe you haven’t? Regardless, without the need for extensive training or equipment, snorkeling offers an exciting opportunity to delve into the underwater world. Just grab a mask, snorkel, and fins, (and maybe a plane ticket) and you’re ready to embark on an aquatic adventure.
As you glide through the water, you’ll be amazed by the vibrant fish, dazzling coral reefs, and the peacefulness of the ocean. My favorite part? Snorkeling requires minimal equipment, making it an accessible and enjoyable outdoor hobby for everyone. Plus, it gives you an experience that is unique to each destination you travel to.
Therefore, if you find yourself outdoors and in search of a new hobby, consider giving snorkeling a try. I’ll say that I’m so obsessed with snorkeling that I’ve bought plane tickets purely to go snorkeling. It really sparks my curiosity.
2. Polar Expeditions
I’ll admit, this hobby isn’t for everyone. However, polar expeditions have provided a lot of magnificent achievements by mankind, and you can go on your own polar expedition. It’s not cheap, but you could go to the north pole or South Pole.
It takes years to train for, but it would certainly give you a passion to work towards!
3. Scuba Diving
If you yearn for a profound connection with the ocean, scuba diving provides a more immersive and thrilling experience than snorkeling. By using a self-contained underwater breathing apparatus (SCUBA), you can dive deeper and stay underwater for longer periods, allowing you to explore a whole new world beneath the waves.
The reason SCUBA diving is really special to me is that the certification lasts forever so I’m now making it a point to scuba dive in every beach location I travel to. All you need is your open water diver certification to be able to go out and dive.
Scuba diving requires some specialized equipment, such as:
Scuba tank
Regulator
Buoyancy control device
Fins
Mask
Wetsuit
Once you’re geared up and ready to go (you can rent most of the equipment as well), the possibilities for spending time outdoors are almost endless. From recreational diving to technical diving, cave diving, wreck diving, and deep diving, there’s always a new underwater adventure waiting for you.
Remember, adhering to safety guidelines and diving with a partner is essential for a safe and enjoyable experience. If you aren’t certified, get certified!
4. Spearfishing
Spearfishing is special because it’s a mix of primitive culture with underwater adventure. So if the thrill of hunting and the excitement of diving appeal to you, spearfishing could be your ideal outdoor hobby.
This unique sport combines the challenge of diving or snorkeling with the excitement of fishing, as you use a speargun or a pole spear to catch fish underwater.
Spearfishing not only provides a gentle cardio workout, but also a connection with the underwater world and a sustainable source of fresh, nutritious fish. To get started, you’ll need a spear gun, typical freedive equipment, and proper training.
It takes skill, patience, and a deep understanding of the underwater realm to master spearfishing, but the rewards are well worth the effort.
Plus, you can feel good knowing that you’re practicing a sustainable fishing technique that helps preserve marine ecosystems. There’s no bycatch and the kill is usually clean and quick which makes this extremely sustainable.
5. Freediving
If you’re in search of a more challenging and exhilarating exploration of the underwater world, freediving might be the outdoor hobby for you. This sport involves diving to great depths on a single breath, without the assistance of scuba equipment. While it may sound easy, freediving offers a unique and rewarding experience that combines the beauty of the ocean with the challenge of pushing your physical and mental limits.
To get started with freediving, you’ll need a wetsuit, fins, and a weight belt, as well as a solid understanding of proper breathing and equalizing techniques. As you progress in your freediving journey, you’ll learn to stay focused and relaxed underwater, which can help you become more in tune with your body and its capabilities.
Always ensure to follow safety guidelines and remain mindful of potential risks such as shallow water blackout, hypoxia, and decompression sickness.
If you think freediving is easy, think again. It’s actually an extremely technical sport so I’d certainly recommend proper training.
6. Surfing
Catch a wave! Surfing, one of the world’s most popular outdoor hobbies, is loved for good reasons. Surfing offers a thrilling combination of physical exercise, balance, and a deep connection with the ocean.
To get started, all you need is a surfboard, a wetsuit (maybe), and a leash. As you progress, you’ll learn to read the waves, perfect your technique, and maybe even pull off some impressive tricks.
I’ve never surfed before, mainly because lessons are quite expensive and theres other water activities that I like more (ahemmm… scuba diving). However many people swear by the tranquility surfing brings.
7. Sailing
If open seas exploration has always been a dream of yours (it has for me), sailing could be your ideal outdoor hobby. Sailing is an adventurous and skillful pastime that allows you to harness the power of the wind to navigate through the water. The best part? Sailing can be as simple or as complex as you want it to be, making it suitable for people of all experience levels and abilities.
To get started, realistically I’d recommend getting trained by taking ASA sailing courses. It’s important to practice regularly and be prepared to invest some time and money into your new hobby, as sailing can be a pricey pastime. But with a little dedication and a lot of practice, you’ll soon be exploring the world’s most beautiful waterways and experiencing the thrill of sailing first-hand.
8. Bushcraft And Survival
My favorite hobby that proves to be difficult yet rewarding is survival/ primitive skills. This unique pastime teaches you how to:
Live off the land
Be self-sufficient in the wilderness
Build shelters
Start fires
Identify edible plants
Navigate through the wilderness
Hell of a lot more
To get started, all it takes is reading a few survival books. However once you decide you REALLY want to learn, you should absolutely take survival courses.
I took many courses and became a survival instructor through the pathfinder survival school. Funny thing is that I thought I knew survival BEFORE taking their courses. Boy was I wrong… I learned more than I could have ever imagined.
As you progress, you’ll be able to take on more challenging wilderness adventures and develop a deep connection with the natural world around you.
So, if you’re ready to leave the comforts of home behind and embark on an unforgettable outdoor adventure, bushcraft and survival skills might be the perfect hobby for you.
9. Mountaineering
If the thrill of conquering new heights sparks your interest, mountaineering – a mix of hiking, climbing, glacier travel, and camping – could be your next outdoor hobby, offering you challenging peaks to conquer and breathtaking views to enjoy.
Mountaineering has kindof a loose definition as it can be anything from leisurely hill walks to technical ascents of the world’s highest mountains. Regardless, theres probably something you’d enjoy about it.
To get started, you’ll need some basic climbing gear and knowledge of mountaineering techniques. Training is essential depending on how technical you’re wanting to come.
I took a month long mountaineering course up in Alaska with the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS), which I’d recommend for anyone wanting to do technical climbs.
It’s also (obviously) important to be physically fit and prepared for the challenges of high-altitude environments.
As you progress, you’ll have the opportunity to explore some of the most stunning and remote landscapes on earth, pushing your limits and creating unforgettable memories along the way.
10. Thru-Hiking
If the notion of submerging yourself in nature for weeks or even months appeals to you, then thru-hiking could be the ideal outdoor hobby for you. This endurance-based activity involves hiking long trails from start to finish, often taking weeks or months to complete. From famous trails like the Appalachian Trail or the Pacific Crest Trail to lesser-known gems, there’s a thru-hike to suit every adventurer.
My favorite trail that I (unbiasedly) think is the best trail in the world, is the John Muir Trail. I thru hiked this for a month and it changed my lfie forever.
Thru-hiking requires physical fitness, mental resilience, and careful planning to ensure you have the right gear, food, and supplies for your journey. But with each step, you’ll be rewarded with stunning vistas, unforgettable experiences, and the satisfaction of knowing you’ve accomplished something truly extraordinary.
So, lace up your trail running shoes (or boots I guess) and set your sights on the horizon – the adventure of a lifetime starts when you do!
11. Canoeing
If water-based adventures are more your style, canoeing offers a tranquil and flexible outdoor hobby that allows for exploration of rivers, lakes, and other waterways at a leisurely pace. Some benefits of canoeing include:
Enjoying leisurely paddles on calm waters
Experiencing thrilling whitewater adventures
Exploring new areas and discovering hidden gems
Connecting with nature and wildlife
Getting a full-body workout while enjoying the outdoors
Canoeing truly offers something for everyone, and it allows you to immerse yourself into the most remote environments on earth. This is why Canoeing is my favorite method of wilderness transportation.
To get started with canoeing, all you need is:
A canoe
A paddle
A life jacket
As you progress, you can try more advanced techniques, explore new waterways, and even combine your canoeing adventures with other outdoor activities like fishing or camping.
If you live in the United States, check out the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. This is the premier place for wilderness canoeing, and one of the most incredible areas in the world.
12. Wild Foraging
For those with a deep appreciation for nature, wild foraging is an eco-friendly and educational outdoor hobby that involves identifying and gathering nature’s edible offerings such as plants, mushrooms, and berries. From woodland walks to coastal forays, wild foraging offers a unique way to connect with the environment and learn more about the bounty of nature.
I’ve written guides on wild edible plants in Minnesota, as well as wild edible plants in Ohio. I also wrote about the best foraging books out there. It’s a passion that can really pay dividends in the long run.
To get started, consider taking a wild foraging course or joining a local group to learn the basics of plant identification, seasonal availability, and sustainable harvesting practices. As you progress, you’ll develop a deeper appreciation for the natural world and the wealth of flavors it has to offer.
I’d recommend downloading the SEEK app. This app can help you identify plants in your area so you can go home and study up on them!
13. Horseback Riding
Saddle up for the rewarding outdoor hobby of horse riding, an ideal choice for both animal enthusiasts and adventure seekers! Horseback riding allows you to bond with animals, explore new terrain, and improve your balance and coordination.
To get started, consider taking riding lessons at a local stable or ranch to learn the basics of horsemanship, safety, and riding technique. As you progress, you can try different riding disciplines, join clubs or teams, and even participate in horse shows or competitions.
Last time I rode horses was in Alaska, and the horse practically mocked me and did its own thing for the entire 2 hours I was with him… oh well. He could tell I was a novice! Ha!
14. Mountain Biking
If you’re after an adrenaline-fueled person wanting an exciting outdoor hobby that involves exploring rugged trails and the excitement of off-road cycling; mountain biking is a great hobby for you. This exciting sport combines physical exercise, balance, and a deep connection with nature, making it one of the best outdoor hobbies for thrill-seekers.
To get started, you’ll need a sturdy mountain bike, a helmet, and some protective gear. Then hit the trails and start exploring! From gentle dirt paths to technical singletracks, there’s a mountain biking adventure for everyone.
Just remember to always wear your safety equipment (helmet) and follow trail etiquette to ensure a fun and safe experience for everyone. Be smart too… I broke my collarbone trying to hit jumps on MTB trails in Colorado.
It’s a fun hobby if you don’t get hurt!
15. Metal Detecting
For those who enjoy hunting for treasure and delving into history, metal detecting is a thrilling outdoor hobby that marries the excitement of discovery with the pleasure of outdoor leisure. Armed with a metal detector, you’ll sweep the ground in search of hidden treasures like:
coins
jewelry
relics
artifacts
I recently found a great spot to pursue this hobby… an old civil war camp. I haven’t searched yet but I’ll update this when I find some cool things!
To get started, all you need is a metal detector, a digging tool, and a location. As you explore parks, beaches, and historical sites, you’ll uncover fascinating stories from the past and maybe even find some valuable treasures.
16. Tree Climbing
I’ve got someone close to me that used to tree climb quite often. I’ve never done it, but would absolutely love to get started.
If you’re on the hunt for an adventurous and unique outdoor hobby that doesn’t require a lot of gear, tree climbing could be just what you’re looking for. This exciting activity offers a new perspective on nature as you ascend into the canopy and explore the world from above.
To get started, you’ll need a harness, ropes, and some basic tree climbing skills. As you progress, you can try more advanced techniques and even participate in tree climbing competitions or events. Just be sure to always follow safety guidelines and respect the environment, as climbing trees can be potentially harmful to both you and the tree if not done properly.
17. Rock Climbing
Although I don’t love rock climbing, that doesn’t mean you won’t. Scaling new heights with rock climbing is a physically and mentally demanding outdoor hobby that pushes your strength, agility, and problem-solving skills to their limits. From indoor climbing gyms to outdoor crags and cliffs, there’s a rock climbing adventure for everyone.

As you progress, you can take on more challenging routes, join climbing clubs or teams, and even participate in competitions.
The best way to get started climbing is by climbing with friends who are already experienced. If you don’t know anyone experienced, join a local climbing gym and you’ll be able to get all the help you need.
